finally found time to actually play through this game, couple a things right out the gate, One: I really like your artstyle, its sprite art but its not the standard 8 bit, 16 bit, whatever art. Its interesting and the set pieces look unique because of it. That being said the main character is kinda shoddily put together in a few places, for one his walk cycle is so, so very strange to me, idk what even to say about it, it just looks weird and my brain kinda has a hard time focusing on it ngl. and than when sprinting, my god the mc's STRIDE bro, I laughed my ass off when I saw it. but yeah besides that the beginning segment is really damn slow, and didnt invest me all too much, It got alot better when we got to the town segments though. One of the reasons I think that is, is just how silent the beginning part is, your actually really good with music so it helps alot later on when im hearing the music swell when somethings happening. Storywise its fine, I liked where it went but it suffered from some pacing issues, mainly the slow opening which led to the much better middle and end. Looking at it as a complete package I'd definitely say this game is worth a playthrough, definitely one I enjoyed going through.
Thank you for the review! Really happy that you liked the middle and the end, the beginning is much more understandable everytime I play through the game again. Originally, after the hospital the game was just supposed to end with the MC flagging down a car. But then as I went on I kind of just realized that it didn't make much sense and by the time you almost get hit by the train is when I fully understood where I wanted the game to go. The game was made by area chronologically, it kind of just ballooned from this small hospital horror fest into this big thing.
The menu and credit theme was made by a great musician who is Malito Music on twitter and most of the ambience was made by a close friend of mine and excellent musician, Brutalmoon. I made some tracks, edited and mixed all of tracks in game, and made most of the sound effects.
I really appreciate your playthrough, and like I said before, hope to make more games soon. Definitely check out my submission to the Dread XP jam, Cibus arcade. A fun lil arcade-y horror game.
Was there any favorite parts? What do you think worked the best?
well, if we're going by my favourite bits than I'm just going to say massive spoilers ahead for anybody else reading this. some of my favourite bits included was the Psycho with the hook being found mangled in a locker before something massive tried to crush us (on second thought that might've been the building collapsing? it was just shadowy blocks so it was kinda hard to tell.) anyway the Death was a shock and immediately put me on edge since it meant that something BIGGER was out their trying to kill me. Another cool little thing was the Shadow figure huddled in the room muttering curses and murder threats, I'm not smart enough to know what it symbolizes but the fact it doesn't actually attack us kinda made it creepier, though ngl when I shot it and the game crashed I was caught so off guard I laughed. And finally I think the last 2 enemies, that strange crying tentacle with the baby head and the Brain creatures that fell apart were masterful in terms of body horror. The arena segment they were in went on a little long but I felt the creatures themselves made up for it.
I will try your 3rd and Final game (as of right now) Cibus Arcade when I have time. Your library has certainly been creepy and entertaining so far, So im excited to see what it could be like, as it seems more experimental than your first 2.
Most people don't end up realizing that the hook handed guy was the guy dead in the locker. And I had a lot of fun designing that last area. The statue, the enemies, the area itself as all very messy which was fun.
There was two secret areas in the game so maybe a couple years down the line and you try this game out again, double back in some areas and pay attention to certain things and you'll find it.
Thank you for your support, it's very motivating to see people still playing this game.
Really good game that gets you. This game builds up an amazing atmosphere and this is complemented by the really good sounddesign.
Keep it up!!
It's finally damn here
